Now a decade into the rebirth of shellfish aquaculture in Delaware’s Inland Bays, the program is still struggling to take hold. Topping the list of reasons why is that watermen do not have access to a commercial dock, said Delaware Aquaculture Association President Mark Casey.

Infrastructure is the biggest barrier, said Casey, and a good commercial dock on the west side of Rehoboth Bay is what the industry needs. A dock would save aquaculturists time and money because there would be less time motoring to leases, he said.

In the Town of Bethany Beach, there are occasional pipe failures due to the considerable sections of the sewer system that are several decades old.  Starting at the beginning of October, work was started to make much needed repairs for the Town's sewer system!

 

'The 18-inch sanitary trunk line running beneath Pennsylvania Avenue from Central Avenue to the southern Town limits is currently in a distressed condition. This trunk line exhibits a tension crack along the top inside surface. At multiple locations the cracks extend through the pipe and these cracks allow ground water to enter the pipe at a large flow rate, bringing with it the surrounding soil.  As we look back at the first 3 quarters of 2023 compared to recent years, the Ocean View real estate market remained firm, even as interest rates rose to levels that we have not experienced in more than 20 years.

The continuation of inventory shortages coupled with pent up buyer demand has kept values stable. Inventory of properties for sale in Ocean View was flat on October 1 when compared to the same day in 2022.

As we look back at the first 3 quarters of 2023 compared to recent years, the Bear Trap real estate market slowed considerably. Even as interest rates rose to levels that we have not experienced in more than 20 years, the primary factor that contributed to the slowdown was the continuation of inventory shortages.

Last Fall, we experienced a slight uptick in inventory, but as the chart illustrates, that has not been the case so far this year. Inventory in Bear Trap was down 40% on October 1 of 2023 when compared to the same day in 2022.

With just two weeks left for residents to make comment, officials in the Town of Fenwick Island are asking for a final wave of support to thrust the proposed dredging plans into existence.  The dredging will take place in the Northern and Southern channels of the Little Assawoman Bay.

Through the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), Fenwick Isle Town officials have filed for several permits.  After filing for said permits, each branch had requested comments and criticism from residents in the community.  The town is now currently in the third and endmost Round of Public Notifications related to DNREC.  It supports the
